Methodology

RefrigerantWatch publishes only prices we can trace to a source. Here is exactly how the numbers are produced.

Sources

Online list prices. We record the published price for a single cylinder from US online refrigerant sellers (for example Refrigerants Center, Imperial Refrigerants, Refrigerant Depot and Refrigerant Guys). Each observation stores the seller, cylinder size, price, stock status, date and a link to the listing. When a seller shows both a regular and a sale price, we record the price a buyer would pay that day. Multi-cylinder bundle pricing is excluded.

Contractor reports. Contractors can submit what they paid at the counter, with state, cylinder size and availability. Every report enters a review queue and is published only after approval. Names, companies and emails are never published.

Supplier calls. Prices gathered by phone are labelled as such.

Calculations

Median is used instead of average so a single outlier cannot move the number. $/lb is cylinder price divided by the cylinder’s net refrigerant weight, which makes 20, 25 and 30 lb cylinders comparable. Range is the lowest and highest observed price. Prices exclude tax, shipping, hazmat fees and cylinder deposits.

Regions

We group reports into the nine US Census Bureau divisions, with Texas highlighted. Online sellers ship nationally, so their prices are shown as the national baseline; regional medians appear once a division has approved local reports.

Weekly snapshots and week-over-week change

Each week we freeze the median of approved observations from the previous 14 days. Week-over-week change compares the latest snapshot with the one before. The first published week (October 2026) is the baseline, so there is no change figure yet — charts show a single point until more weeks accumulate.

Limitations

Online list prices are not the same as account pricing at a local distributor, which is often lower for established contractors. Online sellers may require EPA Section 608 certification and restrict shipping to some states. Always confirm with your supplier.
