- R-502 in commercial refrigeration; now itself restricted in most new commercial refrigeration
R-404A is an HFC blend used for years as the standard refrigerant in low- and medium-temperature commercial refrigeration, such as walk-in coolers and freezers, reach-ins and other retail food equipment. It replaced the ozone-depleting R-502. Its 100-year GWP (IPCC AR4) is 3,922, one of the highest of the common HFCs.
It is classified A1 by ASHRAE Standard 34 (lower toxicity, no flame propagation) and is typically sold in 24 lb cylinders.
Under EPA’s Technology Transitions rule, new stand-alone retail food refrigeration units manufactured from January 1, 2025 must use a refrigerant with a GWP below 150. EPA’s May 2026 revision set an interim GWP limit of 1,400 for new remote condensing units (from July 27, 2026) and new supermarket systems (from January 1, 2027), tightening to 150 or 300 from January 1, 2032 depending on charge size and configuration. At 3,922, R-404A is above all of these limits. Existing R-404A systems can still be serviced.
AIM Act HFC allowances are counted in GWP-weighted (exchange value) terms, so a high-GWP blend like R-404A uses far more of the shrinking allowance per pound than lower-GWP refrigerants.
R-404A FAQ
What is the price of R-404A per pound?
The median online list price we track for R-404A is $11.84 per pound ($284 for a 24 lb cylinder) as of Oct 21, 2026, with a range of $239–$425 per cylinder across 4 sellers.
Is R-404A being phased out?
For new equipment, largely yes. EPA’s Technology Transitions rule limits new stand-alone retail food refrigeration to refrigerants with GWP below 150 (from 2025), and new remote condensing units and supermarket systems to an interim limit of 1,400 (from July 27, 2026 and January 1, 2027) before tighter limits in 2032. R-404A’s GWP is 3,922. It is still legal to buy R-404A and use it to service existing systems, while overall HFC supply shrinks under the AIM Act phasedown.
