Replaces
R-410A in new residential and light-commercial AC and heat pumps

R-454B is one of the two main refrigerants US manufacturers chose to replace R-410A in new air conditioners and heat pumps. It is a blend of R-32 and the HFO R-1234yf, with a 100-year global warming potential (GWP, IPCC AR4) of 466, about 78% lower than R-410A.

It is classified A2L by ASHRAE Standard 34: lower toxicity and lower flammability. A2L equipment and cylinders require A2L-rated tools, recovery equipment and leak detection, and A2L cylinders use left-hand-thread valves so they cannot be mixed up with non-flammable refrigerants.

Under EPA’s Technology Transitions rule (AIM Act), new residential and light-commercial split AC and heat-pump systems installed from January 1, 2025 must use a refrigerant with a GWP below 700, with a one-year sell-through for systems whose components were manufactured before 2025 (installation deadline January 1, 2026). That is why R-454B demand has grown quickly.
