About R-32

Type
Single-component HFC
ASHRAE safety class
A2L (lower flammability)
GWP (IPCC AR4)
675
Typical cylinder
20 lb is common (left-hand-thread A2L valve)
Replaces
R-410A in new equipment (used by Daikin, Goodman and others)

R-32 is a single-component HFC and the other main R-410A replacement in new US residential equipment. Its GWP (IPCC AR4) is 675, below the 700 threshold set by EPA’s Technology Transitions rule for new residential split systems.

Like R-454B it is an A2L refrigerant, so it requires A2L-rated tools, recovery machines and cylinders. Because it is a single component, it does not fractionate and can be charged as vapor or liquid.

R-32 is also a major component of R-410A (50%) and R-454B (68.9%), so its supply affects several markets at once.

R-32 FAQ

Is R-32 the same as R-454B?

No. R-32 is a single-component HFC (GWP 675); R-454B is a blend of 68.9% R-32 and 31.1% R-1234yf (GWP 466). Both are A2L refrigerants, but they are not interchangeable — use only the refrigerant specified by the equipment manufacturer.

Is R-454B more expensive than R-410A?

Yes. At current online list prices, R-454B costs a median of $23.35/lb versus $9.78/lb for R-410A, about 2.4× as much per pound. Cylinder sizes also differ (R-454B is typically sold in 20 lb cylinders, R-410A in 25 lb).
