About R-134a

Type
Single-component HFC
ASHRAE safety class
A1 (non-flammable)
GWP (IPCC AR4)
1,430
Typical cylinder
30 lb (sold with HVAC 1/4" or automotive 1/2" ACME valves)
Replaces
R-12 in vehicle AC and medium-temperature refrigeration; now being limited in many new products

R-134a is a single-component HFC with zero ozone depletion potential. It replaced the CFC R-12 and is used in vehicle air conditioning, chillers and medium-temperature refrigeration. Its 100-year GWP (IPCC AR4) is 1,430.

It is classified A1 by ASHRAE Standard 34: lower toxicity and no flame propagation. Online sellers list separate 30 lb cylinders for HVAC (1/4" fitting) and automotive (1/2" ACME fitting) use, so check the valve before you order.

Under EPA’s Technology Transitions rule (AIM Act), many new products can no longer use R-134a. Examples: new comfort-cooling chillers installed from January 1, 2025 need a GWP below 700; new household refrigerators, vending machines and stand-alone retail food refrigeration units manufactured from January 1, 2025 need a GWP below 150; and new light-duty passenger vehicles need a GWP below 150 from model year 2025. These limits cover new equipment; existing R-134a equipment can still be serviced.
